Politics: The people of the United Kingdom are getting geared up for general elections, which will be held on December 12. Why are they holding a general election? Didn’t they just get a new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson? Yes they did. Boris Johnson has been trying to get his Brexit deal through Parliament, but he has not been able to get a majority in the UK Parliament to back his plan. He is hoping that the upcoming general election will change the makeup of the UK Parliament and give him the majority he needs, before the next Brexit deadline which is on January 31, 2020.
Arts & Entertainment and Money: Disney launched its streaming service, Disney Plus, a few weeks ago. It is a subscription service through which you can stream shows, like you can on Netflix. However, Disney Plus was launched in the US at a discount to Netflix and other streaming services. It has come out with some new shows, which have something to do with Disney’s major movie franchises, like Marvel and Star Wars. People are really loving one of the new shows – which one? You guessed it – The Mandalorian, which features Baby Yoda!
Science & Technology: The Parker Solar Probe is a spacecraft that was launched in August 2018 to get close to and study our Sun. It is designed to withstand very high temperatures, and to fly by the Sun 24 times, through the ‘corona’. The corona is the outermost layer of the Sun’s atmosphere. It has completed 3 of these fly-bys, and NASA reported that it has recorded and sent back some data that is ‘new and surprising’, regarding the solar wind. Some of these findings? The solar wind is moving around the Sun much faster than was thought before, and the direction of the magnetic field that is in the solar wind, reverses and flips as it moves out. Why are these insights important? This data can be used to see how the Sun spreads energy through our solar system, and can also tell us how stars like the Sun are formed and how they change over time.
Science & Technology: The Geminids are a meteor shower that we can see from the earth in the middle of December. This happens when the earth passes through a trail of rocks left by an asteroid or and extinct comet. If we have clear skies, we will be able to see them in India on December 14.
Hangout: The spooky Friday the 13th is looming large! It is a superstition that this is an unlucky day. Some people believe so strongly in this that they won’t take major decisions on even take a flight on this day! Why is it considered unlucky? One of the reasons is presumed to be because Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus Christ, was the 13th guest at the Last Supper, and Jesus Christ was crucified on a Friday. Whatever the reason, this is a great day to bring out your favourite spooky movies and have some fun!
