Focus on the positive

The canal water in Venice is clearer because of the decrease in boat activity.

Over the last several weeks, the news has been flooded with stories of the rapidly escalating Coronavirus pandemic across the world. Lockdowns, curfews, illness and death has created a flood of sadness and negativity, but as with every dark cloud, there seems to be a silver lining to all this.

As major cities across the world have been forced to shut down and compel their citizens to remain indoors in order to stop the spread of Covid-19, there have been fewer cars on the road. No cruise ships are slicing through the oceans and fewer factories are dumping waste into the air and the sea. As a result, although people are suffering, Planet Earth and Mother Nature are healing.

Recently, European newspapers have reported that the canals in Venice, which are famous for being dirty and polluted are actually flowing clean again. Reports claim that the bottom of the canals are visible and fish and underwater plants can be seen as well.

Closer to home, Mumbai along with many cities in the state of Maharashtra were placed under curfew on Sunday, which means no one was allowed to step outside their homes. Only those who provide essential services such as police personnel, doctors, nurses and city maintenance workers were allowed to continue their duties.

People living close to Mumbai’s coastline were lucky enough to see pods of humpback dolphins swimming close to the shore. These graceful and beautiful creatures never come close to the Mumbai beaches due to the high levels of water pollution, noise and a large number of boats in the water.

The stillness and silence of the curfew brought the dolphins out to play.

So as we all continue to come together to fight the coronavirus, let us take hope in these small, but significant positive things!
