What is the Islamic State or ISIS?

ISIS is a group based in the Middle East, mainly in Iraq and Syria, whose members have extreme religious beliefs. They use violence against anyone who doesn’t agree with their views.

ISIS stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. It is also known as IS (Islamic State) or ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant).

It was reportedly formed in the early 2000’s and got a boost in 2010 under the leadership of a man called Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

ISIS aims to establish a caliphate in Iraq, Syria and ultimately, the whole world. A caliphate is an Islamic state ruled by one supreme leader. Its fighters have already taken over some cities in Syria and Iraq but government forces are fighting back. Many ordinary citizens are fleeing their homes to escape the fighting.

ISIS resorts to extremely violent means to spread its control and encourages terrorist attacks on hotels, places of worship, city streets and places where common citizens gather. It has struck fear in the hearts of many people and leaders around the world.

The group has recruited foreign fighters from other countries using the internet and social media. It has carried out attacks in different parts of the world. For example, it claimed responsibility for the terror attacks in Paris in 2015 and recently in Egypt in 2017.

The group claims to follow the religion of Islam but many people say its belief in violence has nothing to do with the peaceful principles that the majority of Muslims believe in.
