Mexico has elected a new leader. Will he bring in the much needed change?

The country of Mexico has elected a new leader. His name?

Andres Manuel Obrador, or AMLO as he is better known as. He will take over as President from current President Enrique Peña Nieto on December 1, 2018. As incoming President, he has a lot on his plate.

What is the current situation or mood in Mexico?

Reports from the country indicate that Mexicans are upset about poverty, crime, and corruption. Their problems have been increasing over the last 10 years and they are looking for change.

Several international reports are stating that Mexico is broken.

  • Almost 44% of Mexico’s population lives below the poverty line. This means that almost half of the people in Mexico don’t have enough money to lead their lives, and need help from the government.
  • In addition to that, crime in the country is at a 20 year high. During the recent elections, a staggering 120 local politicians have been killed.
  • The outgoing government has been accused of corruption and of living like millionaires when the population is suffering.

Even though Mexico’s business sector has transformed over the last 10 years, only a minority of the population is enjoying the fruits. Many big companies such as airplane manufacturer Boeing, and car manufacturer Ford have set up high tech units in Mexico but only employ a small percent of the labour force at very low wages.

Will AMLO be able to end the Mexican woes?

AMLO won 53% of the total votes cast. There were 4 serious candidates but he won by a large margin.

The citizens of Mexico believe that he has the political experience required to be a leader. He was the Mayor of Mexico City in 2000 and stood for President twice. Even after two losses in 2006 and 2012 his hard work for the community and his rigorous campaigning paid off.

In his campaign, he said he is determined to go down in history as a President to be remembered. He has promised to deliver a safer country, clamp down on corruption, reduce crime, provide better infrastructure such as roads, increase wages, and much more.

These promises have won him the popular vote. On July 1, 2018, tens of thousands of people frustrated with the current situation came out to Zocalo in Mexico City, to hear AMLO deliver his victory speech and to celebrate the start of a new era.

In addition to dealing with the home front, AMLO will need to renegotiate Mexico’s position in The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Stay tuned to learn more about NAFTA and MEXICO!
