The News: President Donald Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives.
Background: The House voted on two charges:
- That the President abused his power when he asked the Ukranians to help him with digging up information on his rivals in the upcoming Presidential elections, and
- That he obstructed Congress by refusing to provide documents and access to witnesses as this issue was being investigated.
Three US Presidents have been impeached so far by the House of Representatives – Johnson, Clinton, and now Trump.
Nearly all Democrats in the House voted for the charges and all Republicans against them.
What’s the next step? There will be a trial early next year in the Senate. They will decide if Trump remains in office or not. He will be removed only if 2/3 of the Senate vote to charge him and if that happens, current Vice President Mike Pence will take Office.
