Turkey just voted and the results are in! They have re-elected Recep Tayyip Erdogan as their President, by awarding him an estimated 52-53% of the votes. There were a few candidates opposing him. His main competition was from Muharrem İnce, who got an approximate 30-31% of the vote.

Is this a good thing? It is unclear. Last year, the Turks gave the President much more power and control than anyone in this Office has enjoyed before. A few of the additional powers he has taken on:

  • Erdogan can stay in Office until 2028 if he is re-elected again in 2023.
  • The Prime Minister used to be Head of Government and the President used to be Head of State. Now he will be the Head of State and Government.
  • The President can hire and fire many important ministers and judges without need for consultation of others

All this has happened after a failed coup attempt in 2016. Since then, Erdogan has assumed more power, and been able to silence a lot of his critics. We have in the recent past heard of other leaders around the world assuming greater powers: Putin got re-elected for a fourth term recently, Xi-Jinping of China assumed greater powers as well and figured out how to stay in office indefinitely.
