What is an organ? It is a group of tissues that work together to perform a function. Examples include the heart and the stomach.
How many organs does the human body have? Some say its close to 80!
What is the mesentery? Researchers at the University Hospital Limerick in Ireland, first discovered this organ, which they say is in the lining of the abdominal cavity. This connects the intestine to the abdomen.
What does the mesentery do? Well, the mesentery tissues have been supplying the area with blood and storing fat amongst other things. It is unknown right now what the tissues together in the mesentery organ do. Researchers hope to study this and to uncover what role it might play in different diseases so that they can then use this information to design better medicines. It’s certainly exciting – it’s not every day that we get to know of a new organ in the human body!
