Ben Stokes’ stunning 135 not out makes the impossible possible and keeps the Ashes alive for England

Six weeks after willing England to their first-ever ODI World Cup, Ben Stokes was in the drivers’ seat once again as he took the English team past the finish line against all odds. The fans in Headingly and across the world watching on their phones and television sets couldn’t believe their eyes as Superman-Stokes became England’s savior once again.

The Australians were leading the Ashes Test series 1-0 before the third test match. Right through the 4th day’s play, it was the visiting side that continued to dominate the proceedings. With 73 runs needed and 1 wicket left in hand, the odds were firmly in Australia’s favor.

Ben Stokes then played one of his best Test innings and quite possibly one of the greatest innings in the history of Test cricket. His uninterrupted 76-run partnership with Jack Leach helped England pursue 359 in the fourth innings and level the series 1-1. Stokes scored 75 of those runs.

The past two years have been a roller coaster ride for Ben Stokes. Towards the end of 2017, Stokes was involved in a brawl outside a nightclub in England and was dropped from the last Ashes contest. Two years later, he won England a World Cup and through sheer talent, grit and a little bit of luck has kept them alive in the Ashes.

The 4th Test will start on September 4th in Manchester.
