ICC World Cup: Sri Lanka beat England!

Hosts England were considered one of the strongest teams at the World Cup. Yet, the 3 Lions suffered their 2nd loss against a sub-continental team. After a shock loss to Pakistan early in the tournament, England went down to Sri Lanka in Leeds.

Sri Lanka are no pushovers, but they haven’t had the best of World Cup campaigns. This time however, the Islanders woke up in Leeds to stun the hosts. This is the first time Sri Lanka beat England at the World Cup since 1996. After batting first, Sri Lanka came up with a below par score of 232/9, a score against which England looked too strong.

The downfall came early. England lost early wickets as Sri Lanka looked set to inflict a shock defeat. But Joe Root and Ben Stokes rescued England in the middle overs. Sri Lanka had to rely on their veteran Lasith Malinga who finished with 4 wickets in the match. The veteran pacer who came back to England after attending the funeral of his mother-in-law was judged the Man of the Match for his bowling.

Despite wickets falling at regular intervals, Ben Stokes kept smashing the Lankan bowlers as he took England closer to the finish line but he eventually ran out of partners as England ended their 2nd innings at 212.

Sri Lanka won by 20 runs which was their 2nd win of the tournament. A bit of a scare for England who have 3 more games left and that too against big teams like England, Australia and New Zealand and need at least 2 wins to confirm a semi-final berth.
