Upsets at Wimbledon 2019!


The Wimbledon tennis championship has just started and there have been plenty of upsets already. A lot of big names have been stunned! Here are the biggest upsets of the tournament so far:

  1. Reilly Opelka beat Stan Wawrinka

3-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka was shown the door in the 2nd round of the championship by a 6 foot 11 inch tall unseeded American. The Swiss star was under pressure right from the start as he lost to World number 63, Reilly Opelka. Opelka is already making waves for his big serves, and won 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 8-6,

  1. Yulia Putintseva beat Naomi Osaka 

After winning back to back Grand Slams, Naomi Osaka is now struggling get past the opening week at Wimbledon! The Japanese star was up against Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in the opening round. Yulia, playing at center court for the first time stunned the World number 2 Osaka 7-6, 6-2.

  1. Cori Gauff beat Venus Williams 

The biggest upset of the tournament also came at the center court when 15-year-old American Cori Gauff beat 5-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams! Cori playing her first ever Grand Slam match, beat Williams 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets. Cori considers Venus and Serena to be her idols and said that her dream was to win the opening match against the senior Williams sister.
